そのチェコに、「クニホボット」というオンラインの古本屋があります。2019年に始まったこのサービスは、今とても人気があります。使い方はとても簡単です。古本を送ると、クニホボットが写真を撮って、値段をつけて、売ってくれます。送料は無料です。今は1日に3万冊の本を受け取り、2万5千冊を売っています。人々が持っている本を手軽に整理できるようにという目的で始まりました。
なぜこんなに人気があるのでしょうか。一つ目の理由は、環境への関心が高まっていることです。古本を買うことはリサイクルの一つの方法です。二つ目の理由は、コロナの影響でインターネットでの買い物が増えたことです。

Many used books starting a second life in the Czech Republic
The Czech Republic is one of the most avid reading nations in Europe. Sixty-five percent of the population reads between five and ten books a year, which is higher than the EU average.
In the Czech Republic, there is an online used bookstore called “Knihobot.” Launched in 2019, this service is now extremely popular. It’s very easy to use: you send in your used books, and Knihobot takes photos, sets a price, and sells them. Shipping is free. Currently, they receive 30,000 books a day and sell 25,000. The service was launched with the goal of helping people easily declutter their book collections.
Why is it so popular? The first reason is growing environmental awareness. Buying used books is a form of recycling. The second reason is the increase in online shopping due to the impact of COVID-19.
Additionally, people who have grown tired of overusing smartphones and computers are returning to physical books. Even as e-books become more prevalent, the popularity of physical books remains undiminished. “Reading-only trips” are also gaining attention.
Kunihobot currently operates in nine countries, including the Czech Republic, Germany, and France. However, because it has grown so rapidly, there has been criticism regarding poor working conditions for its employees. How the company will grow from here is a key challenge.
