虫とたたかう菌 ― しぜんが生んだ小さなヒーロー
世界には たくさんの人が います。
みんなが 食べる ために、たくさんの 野菜や 果物を 作らなければ なりません。
でも、虫が 作物を 食べて しまいます。
そのため、野菜を そだてる 人は のうやくを 使う ことが あります。
しかし、この のうやくは 人や 動物、そして 自然に 悪い ことも あります。
そこで、「虫を びょうきに させる 菌」が あります。
この 菌は、虫の 体に くっついて、中に 入ります。
そして、虫の 体の 中で ふえて、虫を たおします。
虫が しんだ あと、菌は 外に 出て、小さい たねの ような ものを つくります。
それが 風で とんで、また ほかの 虫に くっつきます。
この 菌は 人や いぬ、ねこには びょうきを うつしません。
だから、のうやくより しぜんに やさしい と いわれています。
でも、ミツバチ など 大切な 虫に えいきょうが ないか、よく かんがえる ひつようが あります。
この 菌は、しょうらいの のうぎょうを たすける かもしれません。

Bug-Fighting Fungi: Nature’s Tiny Heroes
There are many people in the world.
To feed everyone, we must grow lots of vegetables and fruits.
But insects eat the crops.
So, people who grow vegetables sometimes use pesticides.
However, these pesticides can also be harmful to people, animals, and nature.
That’s where “fungi that make insects sick” come in.
These fungus attach themselves to the insects’ bodies and enter inside.
Then, they multiply inside the insect’s body and kill it.
After the insect dies, the fungi exit and create small seed-like structures.
These are carried by the wind and attach to other insects.
These fungi do not cause disease in humans, dogs, or cats.
Therefore, they are said to be gentler on nature than pesticides.
However, we must carefully consider whether they might affect important insects like honeybees.
These fungi may help support future agriculture.
