普段詩を読んだり書いたりすることはありますか？私は学校卒業後は詩を手に取って読んだり、自分で作ることはほとんどなくなりました。でも日本を含め、世界中で昔から詩を楽しむ文化があります。あなたの国でもありますか？詩は短い言葉の中に、深い感情や人生の真実を込めた表現です。今回紹介するのは、ネパールを代表する詩人・作家のマニ・ロハニさんへのインタビュー記事です。詩と物語の違い、愛が人生でどのくらい大切なのか、一緒に考えてみましょう。
ネパールの詩人が語る、人生、文学、そして詩の世界
マニ・ロハニは、ネパール出身の作家であり、30年以上にわたり詩と小説の両分野で活動ている。彼は愛・や人生、人間関係、死といった普遍的なテーマを追求してきた。詩集『マラミ・サージ』、短編集『パラスト・プレム』『ニルバストラ・マン』、そして国家的な文学賞を受賞した著作など、多数の作品を持つ。彼の詩と物語は複数の言語に翻訳されており、ネパールの学校教科書にも収録されている。
今回のインタビューでは、文学・詩・社会についての彼の考えが語られた。
愛と人間関係について、ロハニは「人間関係とその浮き沈みが私の関心の対象です。」と語る。「愛こそが人生に活力と幸せをもたらすものだが、すべての人が愛に恵まれるわけではない。愛や人間関係に不満がある人が増えるほど、社会の混乱も増していく。社会が美しくあるためには、だれもが愛とともに生きなければならない。誰もが喜ばしい人間関係を持つに値する。愛は人間の探求でもあり、満足でもある。」
詩と物語の違いについてこのように説明する。「詩は経験をほとんど表現しないのに対し、物語は社会と結びついている。詩は個人の心に関わるものであり、物語は社会の心理に関わるもの。詩は瞑想へと人を導く”マントラ”のようなものである一方、物語は社会を変えていく行動だ。」しかし、読者は自分の解釈で自由に作品を読んでよい、とも彼は強調する。彼が書くときに意識しているのは、多くの知識や経験を持ちながらも、それをうまく言葉にできない読者たちのことだ。「彼らの感情を、彼ら自身が理解できる形で書きたい」と語る。
ネパールの詩と世界の文学的流行との関係についての質問には、詩だけでなく人間の活動もすべてグローバルになりつつあると述べる。世界の片隅で書かれた詩も、他の場所で簡単に読むことができる。作品を世界に届けるために翻訳の努力が重ねられ、翻訳や文学活動を通じて、世界文学との交流が生まれている。そして世界がグローバルになる一方で、彼は故郷の文化を世界文学にとって意味のある素材と考え、地元の文化的特徴を文章に取り入れるようにしている。
最後に読者へのメッセージとしてこのように述べる。「人間の最も深遠な体験を形作る二つの力である「愛」と「死」への私の探求を通じて、人生に対するより深い理解を得ていただければと願っています。人間関係という感情の世界、その美しさ、儚さ、そして葛藤を通じて、人間の苦しみの多くは愛、あるいは愛の欠如から生じていること、そして愛が育まれてこそ調和のとれた社会が存在し得ることを読者の皆様に思い出してもらいたいのです。私の作品が、人々がより意識的かつ愛情深く、そして有意義に生きるよう促すきっかけとなることを願っています。」

Nepali poet on life, literature, and the world of poetry
Mani Lohani is a Nepalese writer who has been active in both poetry and fiction for over 30 years. He has explored universal themes such as love, life, human relationships, and death. He has authored numerous works, including the poetry collection Malami Saajh, the short story collections Parast Prem and Nirbastra Man, and several works that have won national literary awards. His poetry and stories have been translated into multiple languages and are included in Nepalese school textbooks.
In this interview, he shares his thoughts on literature, poetry, and society.
Regarding love and human relationships, Lohani states, “Human relationships and their ups and downs are the focus of my interest.” “Love is what brings vitality and happiness to life, but not everyone is blessed with it. As the number of people dissatisfied with love and relationships increases, so does social turmoil. For society to be beautiful, everyone must live with love. Everyone deserves joyful relationships. Love is both a human search and a fulfillment.
He explains the difference between poetry and stories as follows: “While poetry expresses experience little, stories are connected to society. Poetry concerns the individual mind, while stories concern the psychology of society. Poetry is like a ‘mantra’ that leads people into meditation, whereas stories are actions that change society.” However, he also emphasizes that readers are free to read his works according to their own understanding. When he writes, he keeps in mind readers who possess a wealth of knowledge and experience but struggle to put it into words. “I want to write about their emotions in a way they themselves can understand,” he says.
When asked about the relationship between Nepali poetry and global literary trends, he notes that not only poetry but all human activities are becoming global. A poem written in a corner of the world can be easily read elsewhere. Efforts at translation are being made to bring works to the world, and through translation and literary activities, exchanges with world literature are emerging. And while the world is becoming global, he considers the culture of his homeland to be meaningful material for world literature and strives to incorporate local cultural characteristics into his writing.
In closing, he offers this message to readers: “I hope that through my exploration of ‘love’ and ‘death’—the two forces that shape humanity’s most profound experiences—you will gain a deeper understanding of life. Through the emotional world of human relationships—its beauty, transience, and conflicts—I want readers to remember that much of human suffering stems from love, or the lack thereof, and that a harmonious society can only exist when love is nurtured. I hope my work will serve as a catalyst to encourage people to live more consciously, lovingly, and meaningfully.”
