「どういたしまして」の本来の意味

「どういたしまして」はお礼を言われたときに返す言葉です。
本来の意味としては、大したことではない、感謝されるほどのことではない、という謙遜の気持ちが込められています。

The original meaning of “Douitashimashite”

“Douitashimashite” is You’re welcome. It is used to return when someone thanks you.
Originally, it was meant to convey a sense of humility, that it is not a big deal, that it is not something to be appreciated.

「どういたしまして」の「どう」っていったい何だ⁉

では、「どう」が何かを知るために「どういたしまして」のつくりをみてみると

どう →「どのように」「どうして」「何を」の意味
いたし → 「する」の謙譲語「いたす」の連用形
まし → 丁寧語を作る「ます」の連用形
て → 反問的用法の終助詞

「どういたしまして」＝「どうしてそんなことがあるでしょうか？」
つまり、私はあなたのために大したことは何もしていませんので、気にしないで下さい、お礼の必要はありません。という謙遜の意味が込められた言葉です。

What’s “Dou” in “Douitashimashite”?

Then, what’s “Dou”? Looking at the structure of “Douitashimashite”, we find the following

Dou → meaning “how”, “why”, or “what”.
shite → the conjunctive form of “itasu”, a humble language of “do”.
mashi → conjunctive form of “masu” which creates polite language
Te → the sentence final particle of the counter-questionative usage

“Douitashimashite” = ”How could that be?”
In other words, I didn’t do anything great for you, so don’t worry about it, there is no need to thank me. It is a word with the meaning of humility.

どういたしまして、って使う？

謙遜の意味がある言葉にもかかわらず、日常で「どういたしまして」を使うと上から目線、偉そう、ととらえられてしまいがちです。そのため、会話例としては正しいのですが、ほかの表現も覚えておくと良いでしょう。

Despite its humble meaning, using “Douitashimashite” tends to be perceived as superior or bossy. Therefore, although it is correct as a conversational example, it is better to remember other expressions.
