「近い」と「近く」の使い分け How to use “chikaku” and “chikai”

近くと近いを整理しよう

「近く」と「近い」、英語では両方nearまたはcloseを使う。

The post office near the school.
学校から近くの郵便局

The post office is near the school.
郵便局は学校から近い

「近く」は名詞、場所自体を指します。
「近い」は形容詞、状態を表します。

おなじ”near”を意味する単語でも「近く」と「近い」では品詞が変わってきます。すると、使い方や修飾の仕方も変わってきます。

Let’s sort out chikaku and chikai.

Both ”Chikaku” and “Chikai” mean near or close in English.

The post office near the school.
学校がっこうから近ちかくの郵便局ゆうびんきょく
Gakkou kara chikaku no Yubinnkyoku.

The post office is near the school.
郵便局ゆうびんきょくは学校がっこうから近ちかい
Yubinnkyoku wa Gakkou kara chikai.

“Chikaku” is a noun, referring to the place itself.
“Chikai” is an adjective, indicating a state of being.

If the part of speech is different, even if the same meaning of near, the usage and modification of the word also change.

名詞：近く

名詞「近く」は「近い場所」の意味があります。

Ex）リモコンはテレビの近くにあるよ。
→テレビに近い場所にある

名詞を名詞で修飾する場合、格助詞「の」でつなぎますね。近い場所を表現したいとき、名詞「近く」で修飾して、「近くの○○」と使えます。

Ex）近くのコンビニに行ってくる。
→近い場所にあるコンビニに行ってくる。
近く + の + コンビニ　のように、コンビニ を 近く で修飾しています。

Noun : chikaku

The noun “chikaku” means “near place”.

Ex) リモコンはテレビの近ちかくにあるよ。
→The remote control is near the TV

When we modify a noun with a noun, we connect the noun with the case particle “no”. To express a nearby place, we can use the noun ”chikaku” to modify it and use ” chikaku no ○○”

Ex)近ちかくのコンビニに行いってくる。
→I’m going to a nearby convenience store.
In this case, convenience store is modified by “chikaku”
chikaku+no+conveni

形容詞：近い

「近い」はイ形容詞です。
「近い」は対象との距離が近い状態を表しています。
名詞を修飾する場合、イ形容詞なので、近い + ○○ のように使います。
こちらは形容詞的に使えばよいのでわかりやすいかな？

Ex) 学校は私の家から近い
　　一番近い道を選ぶ

Adjective : chikai

“chikai” is an I-adjective.
“chikai” expresses the state of being near to an object.
When modifying a noun, it is used as I-adjective.
chikai + ○○
I guess this case is easier to understand?

Ex) 学校は私わたしの家いえから近ちかい
→ The school is near my house.
　　一番いちばん近ちかい道みちを選えらぶ
→ I chose the nearest road.

比べてみよう

名詞：近く
Ex）空港から近くのホテルをさがす。
　　 海の近くを散歩する
　　 すぐ近くからイルカを見た

形容詞：近い
Ex）空港から近いホテルを探す
　　 海に近い場所を散歩する
　　 近い距離からイルカを見た

「近く・近い」の反対の意味の「遠く・遠い」も同じように考えられます。

Let’s compare them

noun : chikaku
Ex) 空港くうこうから近ちかくのホテルを探さがす
I look for a hotel near the airport.
　　海うみの近ちかくを散歩さんぽする
I take a walk near the sea.
　　近ちかい距離きょりからイルカを見みた
I saw dolphins from close by.

Adjective : chikai
Ex) 空港くうこうから近ちかいホテルを探さがす
I look for a hotel near the airport.
　　海うみに近ちかい場所ばしょを散歩さんぽする
I take a walk near the sea.
　　近ちかい距離きょりからイルカを見みた
I saw dolphins from a close distance.

We can use “tohku/tohi”, the opposite of “chikaku/chikai”, in the same way as well.
