Knitting While Watching Movies Gains Popularity
About 200 people gathered at the “Fifty Kino” movie theater in Vienna, the capital of Austria, to take part in a unique event: watching a movie while knitting with yarn and needles.
The event was started by Luisa Palmer, who is in her 30s. During the lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, many people took up knitting while staying at home. Now that the pandemic has subsided, Palmer believes these people are seeking opportunities to connect in person, so she organizes this event once a month.
Soft lighting is provided during the screening so participants can see their work. This lighting also encourages conversation among attendees. The movie serves merely as a “backdrop,” with knitting taking center stage. Natural interactions have emerged, such as experienced knitters teaching techniques to beginners.
Participants’ motivations vary. “In today’s world, where we spend so much time in front of computers, using our hands to create something feels more fulfilling,” Palmer explains. Many also come simply to step away from the digital world and “take things a little slower.” Film selection is also key; Palmer says she prefers “feel-good comedies” she’s already seen. “If it’s a horror movie, people get scared and stop knitting,” she said with a laugh.
This “movies plus crafts” style is gaining popularity across Europe and the United States. This trend of adding new elements to the movie-watching experience demonstrates that people are seeking “authentic connections” in the digital age. The event continues to sell out, and another organizer notes, “You can come alone to relax quietly, or if you’re looking for companionship, this kind of event is the perfect place.”
