詩を読んだり書いたりすることはありますか？日本を含め、世界中で昔から詩を楽しむ文化があります。あなたの国でもありますか？詩は短い言葉の中に、深い気持ちや人生の真理を込めた表現です。今回紹介するのは、ネパールを代表する詩人・作家のマニ・ロハニさんへのインタビュー記事です。詩と物語の違い、愛が人生でどのくらい大切なのか、一緒に考えてみましょう。
ネパールの詩人が語る、人生、文学、そして詩の世界
マニ・ロハニはネパール出身の作家です。30年以上、詩と小説を書いています。愛や人生、人間関係、死など、みんなが感じるテーマについて書いてきました。詩集や短編集など、たくさんの作品があります。彼の詩と物語はいくつかの言語に翻訳されていて、ネパールの学校の教科書にも入っています。
今回のインタビューでは、文学・詩・社会についての考えが語られました。
愛と人間関係について、ロハニさんはこう言っています。「人間関係とその浮き沈みが、私の一番の関心です。愛は人生に元気と幸せをもたらします。でも、すべての人が愛に恵まれるわけではありません。愛や人間関係に不満がある人が増えると、社会も混乱していきます。誰もが愛とともに生き、良い人間関係を持てるようになるべきです。」
詩と物語の違いについては、こう説明しています。「詩の中では経験についてほとんど述べません。それに対し、物語は社会と関係があります。詩は個人の心を、物語は社会の心を表します。詩は瞑想に導く”マントラ”のようなもので、物語は社会を変える行動です。」また、読者は自分の感じ方で自由に読んでいいと言っています。ロハニさんは書くとき、「たくさんの経験や気持ちを持っているけれど、うまく言葉にできない人のために書きたい」と思っているそうです。
世界の文学とネパールの詩との関係については、「今は世界がひとつの村のようになっています。ネパールの片隅で書かれた詩も、世界のどこでも読まれます。」と話しています。翻訳を通じて作品を世界に届ける努力を続ける一方で、故郷の文化を大切にし、地元の特色を文章に取り入れるようにしているそうです。
最後に読者へのメッセージとして、こう語っています。「愛と死という、人生で最も大切な二つのテーマを通して、人生をより深く理解してもらえればと思います。人間関係の美しさや儚さ、苦しさを通して、人の苦しみの多くは愛、または愛がないことから来ていると気づいてほしいです。私の作品が、もっと意識的に、愛情を持って、意味のある生き方をするきっかけになれば嬉しいです。」

Nepali poet on life, literature, and the world of poetry
Mani Lohani is a writer from Nepal. He has been writing poetry and stories for over 30 years. He has written about themes that everyone can relate to, such as love, life, human relationships, and death. He has published numerous works, including poetry collections and short story collections. His poems and stories have been translated into several languages and are included in school textbooks in Nepal.
In this interview, he shared his thoughts on literature, poetry, and society.
Regarding love and human relationships, Lohani says, “Human relationships and their ups and downs are my primary concern. Love brings vitality and happiness to life. However, not everyone is blessed with love. As the number of people dissatisfied with love and relationships increases, society becomes more confused. Everyone should be able to live with love and have good relationships.”
Regarding the difference between poetry and stories, he explains: “In poetry, I rarely describe experiences. Stories, on the other hand, are connected to society. Poetry expresses the individual heart, while stories express the psychology of society. Poetry is like a ‘mantra’ that leads to meditation, while stories are actions that change society.” He also says that readers are free to read his work as they feel. When writing, Lohani says he thinks, “I want to write for people who have many experiences and feelings but cannot express them well in words.”
Regarding the relationship between world literature and Nepali poetry, he says, “The world has now become like a global village. A poem written in a corner of Nepal is read anywhere in the world.” While continuing his efforts to bring his works to the world through translation, he says he cherishes the culture of his homeland and strives to include local characteristics in his writing.
In closing, he shares this message for readers: “I hope that through the two most important themes in life—love and death—you will gain a deeper understanding of life. Through the beauty, transience, and pain of human relationships, I want you to realize that much of human suffering stems from love, or rather, from the absence of love. I would be delighted if my work serves as a catalyst for living a more conscious, loving, and meaningful life.”
