Planting Strong Urban Tree Communities to Cool Our Cities
Cities can sometimes get hotter than the surrounding rice fields and mountains. This is because of all the asphalt and buildings. This is called the “heat island” effect. With global temperatures rising, this problem is getting worse. When it gets too hot, some people feel unwell.
One way to cool the city is to plant trees. Trees create shade and release water vapor from their leaves, cooling the surrounding air. However, trees can also be vulnerable to heat. As temperatures continue to rise, existing trees may struggle to survive.
Research was conducted in the city of Miami, USA. Miami is predicted to see temperatures rise by about 4 degrees Celsius by the end of this century. Researchers examined 249 different tree species in the city and considered how much heat each could tolerate.
The results showed that if temperatures rise by 4 degrees, over 40 percent of the trees might be affected by the heat. It’s generally thought that trees native to a region are often less heat-tolerant than those brought from other countries. However, some are exceptionally resilient.
In future urban planning, it’s crucial to choose trees not just for today, but also considering future temperatures. Selecting resilient trees will keep the city cool and allow people to live healthily.
