ガザのジェノサイドに抗議―ピカソの『ゲルニカ』を新たなイメージで描くスペインの芸術家たち
ピカソの『ゲルニカ』は、戦争の痛みや不条理を描き出した稀有な作品だ。1937年に完成したこの傑作は、高さ3.47メートル、幅7.76メートルにおよぶ巨大な絵画である。スペイン内戦で命を落とした数十万人の人々が受けた暴力や混乱を、そのキャンバスの中に閉じ込めている。ゲルニカとはバスク地方にある町の名前で、1937年にナチスドイツとイタリアのファシスト勢力による爆撃を受け、多くの市民が犠牲になった。
シュールレアリスムの手法で描かれたこの作品の中で、最も見る者の心を引きつけるのが、構図の左下にある「死んだ子どもを抱く母」だ。母親は深い悲しみと苦しみの中で泣き叫びながら、その腕に死んだ子どもを抱いている。ピカソはその後の作品にも、この母と子のモチーフを繰り返し描いた。
ゲルニカ爆撃から80年以上が経過した現在、パレスチナでの虐殺がさらに広がっている。イスラエル政府による無差別攻撃と手をこまねいている多くの外国政府により、子どもたちは爆弾や暴力、飢えの犠牲になり続けている。国連によると、2023年にイスラエル・ガザ戦争が始まって以来、5万人を超えるパレスチナの子どもたちが傷つけられ、あるいは殺されている。その多くが母親の腕の中で息を引き取った。
こうした状況に対し、ガザでの戦争停止を求めるスペインの8人のアーティストが、ピカソの『ゲルニカ』から新たなイメージを創作した。スペインの痛ましい歴史と肩を並べるようなガザの状況を描くことで、スペイン人共通の深層の意識に訴えかけようとしたものだ。
「ゲルニカの母」と題したこの展示は、2025年3月にマドリッドのソフィア王妃芸術センターの前で最初に行われた。約3か月後の6月14日には、数十の組織からなるスペインの反戦団体「パラル・ラ・ゲラ」が、この作品群を再び公共の場で公開した。パレスチナのジェノサイドに反対してスペイン各地で行われるデモに先立ち、スペイン国会議事堂前に展示されたものだ。映画監督ペドロ・アルモドバルをはじめ著名な文化人たちも反戦デモへの参加を呼びかけ、数千人がデモに加わった。

Protesting the Genocide in Gaza: Spanish Artists Reimagine Picasso’s ‘Guernica’
Picasso’s ‘Guernica’ is a rare work that captures the pain and absurdity of war. Completed in 1937, this masterpiece is a massive painting measuring 3.47 meters in height and 7.76 meters in width. It captures on canvas the violence and chaos endured by the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their lives during the Spanish Civil War. Guernica is the name of a town in the Basque region that was bombed by Nazi Germany and Italian fascist forces in 1937, resulting in the deaths of many civilians.
In this work, created using Surrealist techniques, the figure that most captures the viewer’s heart is the “Mother with a Dead Child” in the lower left corner of the composition. The mother, overcome with deep sorrow and anguish, cries out while holding her dead child in her arms. Picasso repeatedly depicted this motif of mother and child in his later works as well.
More than 80 years have passed since the bombing of Guernica, and the massacre in Palestine continues to escalate. Due to the Israeli government’s indiscriminate attacks and the inaction of many foreign governments, children continue to fall victim to bombs, violence, and starvation. According to the United Nations, since the Israel-Gaza war began in 2023, over 50,000 Palestinian children have been injured or killed. Many of them breathed their last in their mothers’ arms.
In response to this situation, eight Spanish artists calling for an end to the war in Gaza have created a new image inspired by Picasso’s *Guernica*. By depicting the situation in Gaza as comparable to Spain’s own tragic history, they sought to appeal to the collective subconscious of the Spanish people.
Titled “The Mother of Guernica,” this exhibition was first held in March 2025 in front of the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid. About three months later, on June 14, the Spanish anti-war coalition “Parar la Guerra,” comprising dozens of organizations, once again displayed this series of works in a public space. The works were displayed in front of the Spanish Parliament ahead of demonstrations held across Spain to protest the genocide in Palestine. Prominent cultural figures, including film director Pedro Almodóvar, called for participation in the anti-war demonstrations, and thousands joined the protests.
The grief of a mother who has lost a child to war knows no borders.
